Limits and restrictions
- Styled letters are not a real font. Each letter is swapped for a different Unicode character that looks similar, which is why the style survives copy and paste. Screen readers may read these characters one by one or skip them, in-app search may not find a styled word, and devices without the right font show empty boxes.
- Line styles such as strikethrough add a combining mark after each character, doubling the character count.
- Letters without a styled version, such as accented letters, stay as typed.
Tips and best practices
- Use fancy text for short names and headings, not whole paragraphs.
- Prefer common styles (bold, script) for the best device support.
- Avoid styled text for important information people need to read or search.
- For bios, try the Instagram Font Generator, which has a profile preview.
Frequently asked questions
Are these fonts free to use?
Yes. They are standard Unicode characters, not font files.
Why do I see boxes instead of letters?
The device does not have a font for those characters. Try a more common style such as bold or script.
Can I use this text in a username?
Many sites only allow plain letters in usernames. Display names are usually more flexible.
Why does upside-down text read backwards?
Flipped text is reversed so it reads correctly when the screen is turned upside down.
Does fancy text help my posts get found?
No. Search usually does not match styled letters, so it can make posts harder to find.
How many styles are there?
26. Use the filter or group menu to narrow them down.
