Limits and restrictions

  • Scripts such as Cyrillic or Arabic are removed unless you choose "Keep non-Latin letters".
  • If removing stop words would leave nothing, the original words are kept.
  • The tool does not check whether a slug is already used on your site.

Tips and best practices

  • Keep slugs short and descriptive: three to five words is plenty.
  • Use hyphens; Google recommends them over underscores.
  • Avoid dates in slugs for content you plan to update.
  • If you change a published URL, add a redirect from the old one.

Frequently asked questions

Should I remove stop words?

It can make slugs shorter, but keep them when they are needed for meaning, for example "how-to-cook".

Hyphens or underscores?

Google recommends hyphens to separate words in URLs.

Can I change a published URL?

Yes, but set up a redirect from the old URL so links keep working.

What happens to emoji?

Emoji are removed, along with other symbols.

Why is my slug empty?

The text had no letters or numbers the tool can use. Try "Keep non-Latin letters".
