How to use the Text Cleaner

Limits and restrictions

  • Zero-width joiners inside emoji are part of the emoji; removing hidden characters can split emoji such as 👨‍👩‍👧 into separate people.
  • "Remove line breaks" joins everything into one paragraph, including headings.
  • The tool does not fix spelling or grammar.

Tips and best practices

  • For PDF text, start with "Remove line breaks", then add blank lines back between paragraphs.
  • Turn on hidden-character removal when text breaks a form, spreadsheet or code.
  • Leave smart quotes alone for published writing; straighten them for code and data.
  • Use Undo freely; nothing is saved until you copy.

Frequently asked questions

Will it change my words?

Only if you turn on "Straighten quotes and dashes". Every other option changes spacing or invisible characters only.

What is a non-breaking space?

A space that stops a line from wrapping. It can cause odd gaps; "Normalize special spaces" turns it into a normal space.

Is there a size limit?

There is no fixed limit, but very long texts may be slower on older phones.

What are hidden characters?

Characters that take no visible space, such as zero-width spaces and soft hyphens. They often come from copying web pages.

Can I undo "Replace my text"?

Yes. Press Undo to bring back the text from before the replacement.
