    Feed preview (approximate)

Captions longer than about 125 characters are shortened with "more". Tap "more" in the preview to expand. On some phones the app may shorten a caption with many line breaks sooner.

How to use the Instagram Caption Counter & Preview

    1. Type or paste your caption into the box.
    2. Watch the counters and the progress bar against 2,200 characters.
    3. Read any warnings: over the limit, more than 5 hashtags, or repeated hashtags.
    4. Check the preview; tap "more" to expand a long caption.
    5. Press Copy caption, or Clear to start again.

    Features and benefits

    • Counts characters the way people see them, so an emoji such as a family emoji counts as one.
    • Separate counts for hashtags, @mentions, lines, emoji and words.
    • A progress bar that turns amber near the limit and red over it.
    • Warnings for captions over 2,200 characters, more than 5 hashtags and repeated hashtags.
    • A feed-style preview that shortens captions over about 125 characters.
    • Works in your browser; the caption is not sent anywhere.

    Examples

    A short promo caption

    Input
Big news! Our summer menu is here ☀️ Swing by this weekend. #summer #brunch
    Result
74 characters, 2 hashtags, 1 emoji, 14 words. It fits easily, and the whole caption shows in the preview without "more".

A caption that is too long

    Input
A story caption of 2,250 characters
    Result
The counter shows 2,250 in red and the note says to remove 50 characters to fit the 2,200-character limit.

    Limits and restrictions

    • Instagram does not publish its caption limit on a help page we could verify. 2,200 characters is the limit most widely reported; treat it as a guide and check the app.
    • Instagram was reported in December 2025 to limit posts and Reels to 5 hashtags (down from 30). The counter warns above 5.
    • Instagram may count some emoji as more than one character, so its number can be slightly higher than ours.
    • The "more" cut-off depends on the phone and screen width; the preview uses about 125 characters as a common approximation.

    Tips and best practices

    • Put your hook in the first sentence, before the cut-off, so people know why to tap "more".
    • Keep 3 to 5 relevant hashtags at the end instead of scattering them through the text.
    • Read the preview on a narrow screen: short lines with emoji take more vertical space than you expect.
    • If you reuse the caption on TikTok, check it in the TikTok Caption Counter too.

    Frequently asked questions

    Does Captionzy save my caption?

No. The counter runs in your browser. Your caption is not sent to our server or stored.

Do spaces, line breaks and hashtags count?

Yes. Every space, line break, emoji, hashtag and mention counts toward the caption length.

How many hashtags can I use on Instagram?

Instagram was reported in December 2025 to allow up to 5 hashtags per post or Reel. Check the app if the rule changes.

Why does my 70-character caption not show "more"?

The preview only shortens captions longer than about 125 characters. Some phones may cut a caption with many line breaks sooner.

Why is my count different from Instagram's?

Apps count some emoji and special characters differently. Differences of a few characters are normal; leave a small margin.

    Are @mentions counted separately?

Yes. The Mentions counter shows how many @usernames are in the caption; they still count toward the total length.
